چکیده مقاله:
Introduction: Sleep disorders are common problems in older adults due to age-related changes in circadian regulation and sleep architecture. Listening to sedative music may be an effective way for sleep quality in older adults. This study aimed to evalute the effect of sedative music on improving sleep quality in older adults.Material and Methods: A literature search of research articles was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar with the following key terms: "sedative music", "sleep improvement", "sleep disorder", " older adults" and older people. ۱۷۰ cross-sectional articles published from ۲۰۰۵ to ۲۰۲۲ were found and reviewed based on the title and abstract, and only ۲۵ cross-sectional articles were included in this review. Finally, the positive effect of sedative music on the sleep quality of older adults was discussed.Result: The results showed listening to music effectively enhances sleep quality in older adults aged ۶۰ years or older. Listening to music for a prioed longer than ۴ weeks was more effective at enhancing sleep quality in older adults than listening to music for less than ۴ weeks. Listening to sedative music provides a significantly higher improvement in sleep quality in older adults than listening to rhythm-centered music (e.g. rap music). According to on psychophysiological oponions, listening to sedative music can enhance sleep by regulating sympathetic nervous system activity and the release of neuroendocrine levels of cortisol, by that means decresing levels of stress and anxiety responses. Conclusion: Music therapy is an effective way for improving sleep quality among older adults and might be the first line of therapy to suggest to older adults with sleep disorders. Music therapy would decrease the need for or dependence on sleeping and sedative medication.
