Application of helium plasma jet in prostatecancer treatment: an in-vivo study

چکیده

Introduction: Prostate cancer is the most common and second cause of death among men in Iran and other countries accordingto Cancer Institute of Tehran University of Medical Science(TUMS). The ۱۰ to ۲۰% of prostate malignant tumors escapetreatment by causing mutations in the androgen receptor. Forthis reason, the development of novel treatment methods is essential.Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is an emerging technologyin medicine. Cold plasma is the forth state of matterthat include many reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactivenitrogen species (RNS) at room temperature.Materials and Methods: Plasma jet developed by the PlasmaTechnology Development Company (Tehran, Iran) was used.After tumor induction (۱۴ days), cold helium plasma was applieddirectly and indirectly (normal saline activated medium).The mice weight and tumor size were analyzed before (۰ day)and after treatment (۷ day). H&E staining was also performed.Results: Our results indicate that the mice weight loss in thecontrol group is significant (p ≤۰.۰۱). The size of the tumoron days ۰ and ۷ was investigated. The tumor size reduction oftreated group compared to the control group (p ≤۰.۰۰۱) showedthe capability of direct and indirect use of CAP in prostate cancertreatment. The pathology image of cancer tissue indicated adecrease in angiogenesis and an increase in apoptosis.Conclusion: In this study, we investigated the effect of plasmajet (direct method) and plasma-activated medium (indirectmethod) on animal models of prostate cancer. Our results provedthat CAP is a promising method for prostate cancer treatment.
