Introduction and Objective: As a global pandemic with high mortality, the coronavirus (COVID -۱۹) disease significantly impacts human life. Therefore, Result more efficient methods for the treatment of this infectious disease is essential. So far, different drugs have been used for the treatment of COVID -۱۹ disease. Iron oxide nanoparticles are inorganic nanoparticles suggested for the treatment of COVID -۱۹. The aim of this study is to review the role of iron oxide nanoparticles in the treatment of COVID -۱۹ disease.Method: The articles used in this review were published during ۲۰۲۰-۲۰۲۲, and were obtained and summarized by searching keywords “COVID -۱۹”, “iron oxide nanoparticles” and “treatment” in Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases.Results: Iron oxide nanoparticles produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) with antimicrobial properties. ROS oxidizes the biological molecules of the virus. For example, it destroys the structural proteins of the virus, especially the S protein which plays a vital role in binding and entering the host cells. Therefore, it neutralizes the virus and disrupts the reproduction and transcription of the virus and the production of infection in the cells. The coating type of iron oxide nanoparticles can also affect the antiviral activity of the particles.Conclusion: The use of iron oxide nanoparticles to treat COVID -۱۹ can prevent the coronavirus entry into the cells and control inflammatory responses.
