Do Non-Health Students Have Awareness of Pre-Marital and Genetic Screening? A Study in Indonesia.

Aim: Premarital screening is a procedure to assess health status before entering the marital stage. In Indonesia, this examination has not been fully optimized for controlling catastrophic diseases, including genetic diseases. The study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, and behavior toward premarital and genetic screening in non-medical and health students. Method: The research was an observational analytics study using a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique used proportional random sampling of ۴۰۰ non-medical and health students. The knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors toward genetic and premarital screening were measured using questionnaires. The chi-square test was used to look for relationships between variables of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors to premarital screening. Findings: Data analysis using the chi-square test (N=۴۰۰) found no significant relationship between knowledge and attitudes and behaviors towards premarital and genetic screening (p-value = ۰.۳۲۷ and ۰.۴۵۹), while the relationship between attitudes and behaviors had a significant relationship (p-value = ۰.۰۲۱). Conclusion: the study concluded no relationship between knowledge and attitudes. However, the study found a relationship between attitudes and behaviors toward premarital and genetic screening in non-health students.
