چکیده مقاله:

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in the world and the secondcause of cancer-related deaths among women. The mortality rate of breast cancer is between۶-۲۹ per ۱۰۰,۰۰۰ cases. Many studies show the relationship between nutrition and breastcancer, and in many of these studies, the relationship between selenium and breast cancer hasbeen shown .Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationshipbetween Selenium and breast cancer. This article is a review article by searching the keywordsSelenium and breast cancer in websites google scholar, SID, pubmed and web of science.Selenium is an essential trace element in the human body and a metalloid (pseudo-metal). Inother words, it has both metallic and non-metallic properties. This feature leads to thissubstance being necessary for human health in small amounts, but harmful and toxic in largeamounts. Selenium exists in foods and supplements in organic and mineral forms, includingselenomethionine (plant, animal sources and food supplements), selenocysteine (mainly animalsources), selenite and selenide (mainly food supplements). Selenium is one of the importantcomponents of the two enzymes thioredoxin reductase and glutathione peroxidase, which as anantioxidant plays an important role in reducing the incidence of cancer by inhibiting theproliferation and inducing apoptosis of cancer cells, inhibiting the genetic mutation of cells andregulating the immune and inflammatory response. Selenium also plays an important role inmany inflammatory, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. Various studies have beenconducted to investigate the relationship between selenium level and breast cancer. Somestudies have shown that the level of selenium in plasma, serum and red blood cells issignificantly lower in patients with breast cancer compared to healthy people. Some studieshave not shown any relationship between serum selenium level and the risk of breast cancer orthe prevalence of this disease. Since there have been many disagreements about the relationshipbetween selenium and breast cancer and some studies have confirmed it and some have rejectedit, it seems necessary to conduct more studies.
