The prediction of academic burnout based on the perception of the learning environment in health science students

چکیده مقاله:

Background and aim: Academic burnout as one of the main challenges of the education system is defined as a psychological syndrome described by incremental emotional fatigue and loss of motivation that can hurt students' physical and mental health and academic performance. Thus, the study of academic burnout and its predictors is of great importance. This study was performed to explore the role of the perception of the learning environment and its subscales in predicting academic burnout in health science students.Materials and method: In this descriptive and analytical study, ۱۳۸ students (general health, environmental health engineering and occupational health and safety engineering) studying at Semnan University of Medical Sciences in ۲۰۱۹ were enrolled by systematic random sampling. Dundee Ready Educational Environment Measure (DREEM) and Academic Burnout Questionnaires (Bresso et al. ۱۹۹۷) questioners were used to obtaining the needed data. Data analysis was performed using a simple and multiple regression analysis by IBM SPSS statistics V.۲۲ software.Results: The results showed that ۹.۴% (F=۴۲.۳, R=۰.۳۱۷, R۲=۰.۰۹۶, Adjusted R۲=۰.۰۹۴, p<۰.۰۱) and ۱۱.۸% (F=۱۱.۷۳, R=۰.۳۵۳, R۲=۰.۱۲۸, Adjusted R۲=۰.۱۱۸, p<۰.۰۱) of the variance in academic burnout could be explained by the overall score and the subscales of students' perception of the learning environment respectively.Conclusion: The main results of the present study showed the importance of perception of the learning environment and its components (students' perception of learning, students' perception of teachers, students' perception of their scientific ability, students' perception of educational atmosphere and students' perception of social conditions of education.), in explaining students' academic burnout. Hence, it is suggested to conduct comprehensive assessments, identify strengths and weaknesses and perform psycho-educational interventions to enhance students' perception of the learning environment. The result of this process can reduce academic burnout in students and consequently improve their academic achievement.
