Ultrasonographic Examination of Polycyclic Kidneys in Shiraz

Background and aim: Polycystic kidney is a common hereditary disease among cats, and it is important to diagnose this disease and prevent mating of the affected animals. In this research, the prevalence of the disease in cats of different ages, sexes and breeds was investigated. Materials and Methods: One hundred and ninety-four cats referred for ultrasonography were examined during one year, and the owners of cats with polycystic kidney disease were invited to cooperate to re-examine all the cases. After the investigation, the data was analyzed using SPSS statistical software and one-way variance analysis. Results: Among ۱۹۴ cats, ۱۹ cats (۹.۸%) had polycystic kidney disease and the results showed that polycystic kidney disease is more common in Persian longhair cats and cats that have a streak of this breed and aging also increases the size of the cysts.   Conclusion: According to the study, it was concluded that polycystic kidney disease occurs in Persian cats and longhair cats in Shiraz city at a rate of ۲۴.۷%.
