The Effect of Adminis tration Licorice Root Extract onThe Improvement of Polycys tic Ovary Syndrome

Background: Polycys tic ovary model is considered as a factorin induction of oxidative s tress within ovarian tissue. Chemicaland herbal extract antioxidants can be used to counter witheffects of these agents. In this s tudy, the preventive effects oflicorice root extract treatment as antioxidant on a mouse modelof polycys tic ovary was assessed.Materials and Methods: ۵ adult NMRI female ۶ weeks’ mice,after ۲ months model induction with a single injection of EstradiolValerate (۴۰ mg/kg), were assessed by measurement ofoxidative s tress and his topathology method. Then ۶۰ mice weredivided to ۴ groups: control, sham, experimental groups ۱ and۲. Experimental group ۱ received a single injection of Es tradiolValerate (۴۰ mg/kg). Experimental group ۲ received a singleinjection of Es tradiol Valerate following by ۴۵۰ mg/kg licoriceroot gavage for ۲۱ consecutive days. In this s tudy, oxidants andantioxidants levels in the ovarian tissue were assessed by flowcytometryand FRAP and his tological s tudy by morphometricmethod, embryo development with IVF. These results wereanalyzed by ANOVA and Chi square tes ts.Results: The obtained results showed that Es tradiol Valerate(۴۰ mg/kg) are able to increase oxidative s tress within ovariantissue and causes ovarian cys ts after two months. In additionlicorice root extract treatment (۴۵۰ mg/kg) can significantly(Pp≤۰.۰۵) increase antioxidants concentration and percentageof In Vitro fertilization compared to the other groups. The correlationbetween antioxidants concentration and ROS levelsshowed that their relationship in polycys tic ovary syndrome(PCO) group and licorice root group was s trong inverse, whilethat in two other groups were moderate inverse. Cys t formationin licorice root group decreases compared to PCO group.Conclusion: Licorice root extract treatment (۴۵۰ mg/kg) couldprevent cys t formation in PCOs group, improvement of in vitrofertilization and made balance between oxidants and antioxidantsinside ovarian tissue. The medicinal properties of plantscould be due to the antioxidant compounds of them.
