Comparison of bactericidal properties of argon and heliumcold atmospheric plasma on multidrug resistance Pseudomonasaeruginosa

Background and Aim : Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram-negative bacterium that has becomeresistant to many antibiotics in recent years. The most common wound infection occurs withPseudomonas aeruginosa, and with the increasing resistance to a variety of antibiotics, newantimicrobial approachs seem necessary. One of the new approach is the use of cold plasma. Coldatmospheric plasma is an innovative, promising tool capable of inactivating bacteria. The presentstudy aimed to investigate in vitro antimicrobial properties of cold argon plasma and cold heliumplasma on Pseudomonas aeruginosa.Methods : : Pseudomonas aeruginosa from the microbial collection of Tabriz University wasselected and approved. Then antibiotic resistance was evaluated by the disk diffusion method, andthe bacterium resistant to most antibiotics was selected. Then a ۱۰۶ CFU/ml bacterial suspentionwas prepared, and used for plasma treatment. Plasma therapy was performed with Argon andhelium gas for different characteristics and times. The surface culture method was used to countthe colony.Results : The results of the inactivation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in suspension by cold plasmaof Argon and helium showed that, with increasing plasma treatment time, the plasma microbicidesproperty increases so that with ۸ minutes of Argon plasma therapy, the microbial suspension isreduced ۳ logs but plasma therapy with helium for ۸ minutes decreased ۲.۵ log of bacteria in themicrobial suspension.Conclusion : The results showed that Argon and helium have bactericidal properties onPseudomonas aeruginosa. Although the characteristics of plasma can vary, the bactericidal rate ofArgon plasma is better than helium.
