چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim : In Persian medicine Ajwain (Carum Copticum (L.)) is recommended forthe treatment of some infections. Due to bacterial resistance to antibiotics, a new antibacterialagent is essential. In this research, bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects of hydroalcoholic andaqueous extracts of Ajwain on E. coli was investigated. Methods : In this in -vitro study a standard sample and ۳۰ clinical isolates of urine culture ofchildren with urinary tract infection from Amirkola Pediatric Hospital in Babol and were used.Antibacterial effects of ۲ groups including hydroalcoholic and aqueous extracts of Ajwain bymeasuring the diameter of the inhibition zone using disc diffusion (concentrations ۱۶, ۳۲, ۶۴, ۱۲۸,۲۵۶ and ۵۱۲ mg /disc) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) and determination ofMinimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MIC) with Microdilution method was compared withGentamicin (۳۰mg /disc) as a positive controlResults : Results: Regarding to the inhibition zone with Gentamicin at concentrations of ۶۴, ۱۲۸,۲۵۶, and ۵۱۲ mg/disc in standard and clinical samples, there was no significant difference.Gentamicin was significantly better at concentrations of ۱۶ and ۳۲. The extract of ۵۱۲ mg /disc(۱۲.۹۳±۲.۶۶) of hydroalcoholic extract of Carum Copticum was significantly better than ۲۵۶ mg/disc (۹.۵۳±۱) (p=۰.۰۰۲). The MIC and MBC for standard samples were ۴ and ۸, respectively, andfor clinical samples ۳.۸۳ ±۲.۳۶ and ۵.۸ mg / ml, respectively. aqueous extracts of Ajwain was notable to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli .Conclusion : The Hydroalcoholic extract of Carum Copticum has bacteriostatic and bactericidaleffects on standard and clinical isolates of Escherichia coli.
