چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim : Phytochemical evaluation is very important for the confirmation ofvarious naturally occurring bioactive secondary metabolites in plants. The aim of this study wasto investigate the preliminary phytochemical screening and antibacterial activity of the leaves ofPsidium guajava L. belonging to family Myrtaceae. Methods : In this project, the leaves of Psidium guajava L. were collected and subjected tosuccessive extraction by microwave assisted extraction (MAE) method. The present study forphytochemical screening method of phytoconstitute by Trease and Evans, Sofowara and Harbonewere followed. Later, the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract of leaves of Psidiumguajava L. was tested using both gram positive as well as gram negative bacteria i.e. (Bacillussubtilis and Escherichia coli) respectively using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) andminimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) methods. Results : The results of the phytochemical screening of methanolic extract of leaves of Psidiumguajava L. were (terpenoids, flavonoids, saponin, tannins, phlobatannins and cardiac glycosides)presented. The methanolic extract of leaves of Psidium guajava L. exhibited good antibacterialpotential against gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains. Conclusion : The findings of the present study demonstrated the potential of phytochemicals fromPsidium guajava L. leaves, a natural source, in the pathway of developing a novel antibacterialagent able of treating bacterial infections.
