Development of a turbulent boundary layer in a strong adverse pressure gradient region

The flow developing downstream of a turbulent boundary layer (TBL) subjected to a strong adverse pressure gradient have been studied experimentally using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The experimental set-up is designed to achieve flow conditions corresponding to trailing-edge stall of an airfoil. Large sets of instantaneous velocity fields are acquired by PIV in streamwise-wall-normal planes at three different streamwise locations in order to study the evolution of TBL characteristics. These locations cover the region downstream of the suction peak where the boundary layer is subjected to a very strong adverse pressure gradient and has suffered from an abrupt transition from strong favorable to strong adverse pressure gradients. Acquired results show the global parameters of the boundary layer (i.e. displacement thickness and momentum thickness) are affected by the pressure gradient. The results also present strong dependency of Reynolds stresses to pressure gradient
