چکیده مقاله:

Saturday by Ian McEwan is one among many works labeled as Post ۹/۱۱ novels. These novels, political in nature, examine the life and times in the aftermath of ۹/۱۱ terrorist attacks. It seems like while other such works as John Updike's Terrorist and Don DeLillo's Falling Man lean toward an antiwar examination of religious fundamentalism, McEwan opted a more hawkish approach. This article discusses the ways through which the journalistic style of this work and a domineering presence of media are employed as the means to support the pro-war policies of the British government during the Iraq War and an attempt at subtle manipulation of masses to quell any dissenting voice of protest in its opposition. The article argues that this novel is a conscious effort in what Noam Chomsky referred to as manufacturing consent, describing a process by which an author writes on public opinion in a propagandistic manner, in order to ensure political social order and acquiescence.
