چکیده مقاله:

Classroom discussion is one opportunity for improving speaking skill. The critical point in the effectiveness of discussions, i.e., students’ speaking improvement, could be due to the degree of students’ participation. Proficiency level and personality trait of introversion/extroversion are among the factors that allow/prevent students take part in discussions. This study focuses on proficiency and INT/EXT as both are pushing forces for students to speak up. If these two factors are considered as two scales, the present study attempts to investigate whether proficiency level makes more contribution to Iranian EFL learners’ participation in discussions or personality trait of INT/EXT. For this purpose, two questionnaires (OPT and EPQ) were distributed to determine the learners’ proficiency level and personality trait of INT/EXT. Afterwards, ۱۲ discussion sessions were held. The performance of students was recognized and the number of their participation attempts was noted. The primary results showed that proficiency level is more important or contributes more to Iranian EFL learners’ participation in discussions than personality trait of INT/EXT. However, dividing the data into groups based on OPT scores and analyzing them separately, it was found that the roles of proficiency level and personality trait of INT/EXT in learners’ participation in discussions becomes balanced.
