Several alternative definitions and taxonomies of Internet of Things (IoT) systems have been suggested during the previous decade. The IoT “envisions a self-configuring, adaptive, sophisticated network that interconnects ‘things' to the Internet through the use of standard communication protocols,” according to the IEEE Internet Initiative's final definitions. As a result, there is a jumbled image and a lack of agreement concerning IoT systems and their components. We did a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) of existing IoT System taxonomies to gain a deeper grasp of the problem and a path ahead. Additionally, we offer a characterization of IoT systems derived from current taxonomies, which provides a more comprehensive perspective of IoT systems than prior taxonomies. It consists of seventeen qualities, which are split into two categories: elements and quality aspects . In the end, there are numerous taxonomies of IoT systems in the literature, each of which only provides one perspective. To our knowledge, no attempt has been made to systematically identify and evaluate those taxonomies in order to comprehensively define IoT systems
