Every structure is likely to undergo minor defects that might put its normal service life at risk of sudden failures. For this reason, a wide range of diagnostic methods have been developed by researchers to guarantee the safety of structures. This paper proposes a damage diagnosis approach based on modal information in the form of a model-updating framework where the inverse problem of diagnosing defects is solved within an optimization process. To help accelerate the method, a meta-heuristic optimization algorithm is applied which is proved to be quite consistent with the entire suggested process. Meanwhile, several numerical examples are examined via the proposed technique to prove the effectiveness of the method, and the effects of external perturbations such as measurement noise as well as the effects of non-availability of complete modal information are investigated in these examples. The method is shown to be quite accurate and capable of finding damaged members of the structure with a great accuracy.
