Antiproliferative and apoptotic effect of Piper cubeba hydroalcoholic extract on the MCF-۷ human breast cancer cell line

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer and a death leading cause among women worldwide. Based on various former studies, herbs may play a significant role in cancer alternative therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the anti- proliferative and apoptosis inducing potential of Piper cubeba. Its anti-proliferative activity on the human breast cancer cell line (MCF-۷) was measured by MTT assay and acridin orange-ethidiuum bromide (AO/ED) staining was used to examine its apoptotic effects phenotypically. The hydroalcoholic extract of Piper cubeba showed anti- proliferative effects in a dose and time dependent manner(P<۰.۰۵). IC۵۰ was ۱ mg/ul. The anti proliferative activity was associated with an increase of apoptosis as demonstrated by AO/ED staining. Our findings showed anti proliferative and apoptotic effect of Piper cubeba fruit on human breast cancer cell line.
