چکیده مقاله:

In this study, Triclosan (2,4,4-trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenyl ether) was used for preparation of antibacterial polyethylene compound. Two masterbatches with 10% triclosan, based on polyethylene (PE) and maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (PE-g-MA), were prepared by an internal mixer. Then, these masterbatches were diluted on PE matrix to 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1% triclosan using a twin screw extruder. The PE-g-MA was used to study polymer matrix polarity effect on triclosan release. In order to examine the effects of crystallization on triclosan release, the samples were cooled via three different cooling modes, isothermal, quench, and a moderate cooling rate. The release of triclosan from the polymer matrix was measured by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The results showed that the samples which contained PE-g-MA had the highest triclosan release. Moreover, the samples which were cooled by quenching had the highest release of triclosan, while the lowest release was shown by isothermally cooled samples. The results showed that the triclosan-containing polyethylene possessed excellent antibacterial properties. Triclosan exhibited better inhibitory effects against the gram-positive bacteria compared to gram-negative bacteria. Furthermore, the presence of maleic anhydride increased antibacterial performance.
