We retrieved geometric and kinematic information on the source of one of the strongest shocks which struck the Mediterranean basin (in the XVII Century: Jan. ۱۱, ۱۶۹۳) by inverting the observed regional damage (in terms of macroseismic intensity) The inversion was rendered feasible by treating observed data directly, without using isoseismals. Rather, we tesselated the spatial distributions of both observed and synthetic intensities with Voronoi polygons; thus, it was possible to compare the quality of the synthesized macroseismic intensity distributions quantitatively and objectively, and find the model which best fits the distribution of observed intensities. The calculated kinematic characteristics are: epicentral coordinates: Lat. ۳۷.۱۳N, Lon. ۱۵°.۰۱E; depth of the nucleation: ۱۰km(±۱۵km-۵km); Seismic Moment: ۴.۵۷(±۱.۲۵).۱۰۱۹ N,m; angle of strike: ۲۰'(±۱۰°); angle of ۸۰'(+۱۰°-۳۲°); angle of rake: ۲۲۲°(+۲۱'-۴۱')±۱۸۰°; length of rupture: ۶۰km, bilateral; rupture velocity: ۲.۲۸km/s; velocity of S-waves in the half space: ۳.۵km/s.
