The moment magnitude (Kw) for the events recorded by the Iranian strong motion network is derived from the corner frequency and spectral level measured in the Fourier spectra of the corrected accelerograms. The calculation is done over a data-base of ۴۶۸ three components time-histories, out of which the teleseismic source data were available for ۲۷۹ three component accelerograms. Tne hypocentral distances are also estimated based on the difference of the arrival times of the compressional and shear waves (when no other estimation is available).The comparison of the calculated moment magnitude and the reported teleseismic M,, mb, ML and M„ indicates, i) that the calculated Ws are consistent with the teleseismic M„r's, and ii) M„.—M, for the magnitudes over ۶ and M„—mh for the magnitude below ۶. The MI. inferred from the local seismological networks in Iran (corresponding to magnitudes less than ۶) are more scattered. The stress drops are estimated as well using the strong motions, which are representative for the intra-plate earthquakes (۳۰ to ۵۰۰ bars)
