Is celiac disease a risk for common bile duct stone? a study to assess the association

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Gallbladder and common bile duct stone are one of the most common problems affecting the digestive tract requiring hospitalization. The causes of CBD stone and sludge are numerous. A variety of hepatic and biliary tract disorders may complicate the clinical course of celiac disease. The aim of this study was to investigating the relationship between celiac disease and common bile duct stone.Methods: We did a cross sectional study in patient with common bile duct stone. Anti tTG IgA antibody was measured in all patients then patients with high antibody levels underwent small bowel biopsy for definitive diagnosis of celiac disease.Results: A total of ۷۳ patient were included; the mean serology of Anti-TTG Ab was ۹.۱۹۳± ۵.۶۷۷ AU. The tissue transglutaminase antibody (IgA) serology groups were < ۱۸ AU in ۶۹ cases (۹۴.۵%) and ≥ ۱۸ AU in ۴ cases (۵.۵%). Therefore, ۴ patients underwent endoscopy and biopsy of duodenal. Histopathology investigation of intestinal biopsy were marsh ۳ in one case. As e result the frequency of celiac disease in patients with common bile duct stones referred to the gastrointestinal ward of Urmia Imam Khomeini Hospital (۲۰۲۰) was reported to be ۱.۴%.Conclusion: No significant relation between gallstones and hypothyroidism was found in this study (p value=۰.۱۷۵) and need further evaluation. The incidence of celiac disease in people with Common bile Duct Stone stones is not high compared to the general population.
