Self-cleaning is one of the most important ways to get rid of contaminants such as soil, toxic contaminants and microbes from any kind of surface. Self-cleaning coatings utilized in a variety of fields such as the textile, automotive, optical, marine, aerospace and construction industries. Self-cleaning is of particular importance in medicine. Infectious diseases, especially emerging and chronic diseases like COVID-19, are responsible for significant mortality worldwide and remain a major significant problem. because of the weakness or lack of use of infection control measures, the surfaces play a significant role in within the spread of infection in health centers and other public spaces, so there's a necessity for more attention to surface contamination in different in several spaces. Therefore, new approaches in surface and materials are have been developed to minimize to reduce acquired infection in public places such as hospitals, transportation, schools, shops, etc. Innovative technologies have identified ways to modify or functionalize the surface. These include surfaces with anti-adhesive properties to minimize microbial bonding or delay the development of biofilms, as well as in combination with biologically active metals that are able to interact with active sites within the membrane and allow inactivation. This review article summarizes the fundamentals, techniques, and applications of various types of self-cleaning coatings. Although several companies have commercialized several products based on self-cleaning technology, there is still lots potential in this area. In addition, additionally, future challenges to make an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, highly sustainable and durable cleaning surface are described.
