In the present study, VB2/Al2O3 reinforced aluminum based composites were fabricated by selfpropagatinghigh-temperature synthesis of (22+x) Al-3V2O5-6B2O3 system. Various concentrations ofextra Al (x between 0 and 65 mol) were added to the primary mixture as diluent agent. Thermodynamiccalculations indicated that the adiabatic temperature of the reaction decreases with increasing the xvalue.X-ray diffraction results confirmed the formation of Al-VB2-Al2O3 composite after synthesisprocess. Macrostructure of the products indicated that the formation of a continuous network of Aldecreased the pore volume fraction in the product at high Al contents. Moreover, the reinforcement’sparticle size decreased with increasing the x-value.
