The Neurochemical Basis of Depression in Cardiovascular Patients

Introduction: Depression is a serious and common mood disorder. The roots of this disorder can be psychological, biological, genetic, and social. Depression is a disorder that is associated with important diseases such as cardiovascular disease. Method: In this review study, different databases such as Magiran, Noormags, Scientific Information Database, Science Direct, Google Scholar were searched out by Persian and English forms of keywords like “depression and cardiovascular diseases”, “depression and endothelial system”. Totally 29 sources were examined, of which 21 were selected for study. Findings Suggested mechanisms of developing cardiovascular diseases by depression include dysfunction of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, inflammatory-immune system, platelet activity, endothelial system and habit pattern changes (metabolic syndrome) and depression in prenatal period.
