Phylogeny of the genus Garra in Iran based on the skeleton of caudal fin

The skeleton of caudal fin is one a source of systematic characters in the classificationof teleosts. Iranian inland waters with 210 species, has a great diversity that almostone third of them belong to cyprinid family. Among the member of this family, thegenus Garra with four species in Iranian inland water has not yet studied in terms ofits phylogentic relationship. Hence this research was conducted to compare theosteological features of caudal fin and phylogenic relationship of the genus Garraalong with Iranocypris typhlops in Iran based on the skeleton of caudal fincharacteristics using cladistics method. For this purpose, two specimens from eachtaxa including Garra ruffa from Karkheh and Tazeh Abad Rivers (Tigris Basin) andIloud spring (Hormoz basin), Garra persica from Kashroud and Sandrak (Makranbasin), Garra rossica from Sarbaz River and two types of I. typhlops (with andwithout disc) as ingroup andKura barbel (Barbus lacerta) and Barzam (apoeta trutta)as outgroup were cleared and stained to extract osteological characteristics. Theresults showed that members of Garra and Iranocypris constitute a monophyleticgroup. In addition, the result revealed that phylogenetic reconstruction using theskeleton of caudal fin can separate the members of the species of Garra andIranocypris.
