In the present study, the sorption behaviour of phosphonate modified nano titania with respect to cerium (Ce) has been investigated in order to consider its application to remove cerium ions from aqueous solutions and also wastewaters. The distribution coefficients (Kd) were determined for the sorption system as a function of initial pH of solution, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial Ce(III) concentration and temperature. The batch method has been employed, using competitive sorption system with Ca(II) concentrations in solution ranging from 30 to 70 mg L-1. According to the percentage sorption and distribution coefficients values, the selectivity sequence of studied Ce(III) cations against Ca(II) ions by sorbent was calculated under the experiments conditions. These results show that nano titania modified using nitrile tris (methylenephosphonic acid) hold great potential to remove cationic heavy metal species from aqueous solutions and probably industrial wastewater.
