The Relationship between Iranian Male/Female EFL Learners’ Personality Types and their Willingness to Communicate across Genders

A plethora of factors including personality type are thought to affect learning language in one way or another Therefore, being aware of the learners’ personality types can be helpful for language teachers as the instructional leaders of the classroom in understanding learners’ learning behaviour and improving their teaching. The present study was an attempt to investigate the relationship between Iranian male/female EFL learners’ personality types (extrovert vs. introvert in this study) and their Willingness to Communicate. In this line, initially, introvert/ extrovert questionnaire and WTC scale were administered to a total number of 60 Iranian male/female EFL learners. Non-random convenience sampling procedure was applied to select the participants of the study including 30 female and 30 male EFL learners learning English in a private language institute in Tabriz. The obtained data were analysed through multiple regression analysis. The results of statistical analysis showed that the male/female extrovert EFL learners are more willing to communicate than the male/female introvert EFL learners. The findings indicate that by developing an awareness of personality types, EFL learners can gain better understanding of their problems. Moreover, EFL teachers can help introvert learners to improve their WTC in order to use the communication opportunities in the target language.
