The cyotoxic effect of Eryngium billardieri on breast cancer cells in comparison with normal cells

Objective: Cancer is recognized as one of the most important life-threatening diseases with 6 million mortalities every year. Breast cancer is one of the leading cancers globally with the highest rate of deaths in women. One in eight women is at risk for this type of cancer. Many plant-derived anticancer drugs are tested on a variety of cancer cell lines and enter clinical trials after purification and animal testing.The Apiaceae family is one of the largest plant families with approximately 450 genera and 3700 species worldwide. Members of Apiaceae have various compounds with many biological activities. Some of the main properties are ability to induce apoptosis, antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Methods:In this study, the cytotoxic effects of Eryngium billardieri methanol extract (belonging to Apiaceae family) were evaluated against MDA-MB-468 and AGO-1522 cells by MTT assay, furthermore, the apoptosis potential has been evaluated by Hoechst 33258 staining in MDA-MB-468 cell line. Result: Methanol extract of Eryngium billardieri showed cytotoxic effects against MDA-MB-468 cell line with IC50 value of ~400 μg/ml and had no cytotoxic effects on AGO-1522 cells at the tested concentrations .In Hoechst staining test,dense and luminous chromatin was found, which can indicate apoptosis.conclusion: .Eryngium billardieri can be suggested for furthure anti cancer studies.
