چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: wound healing is one of the major challenges of health care systems.Since ancient times plants have been used extensively in medical science. Discovering the benefits of plants on the wound healing process can discover optimal and affordable treatments. The present study is designed to compare the effect of Mentha pulegium essence and Aloe vera gel on open wound healing. Methods: This study was performed on 75 healthy male wistar rats 3 to 4 months old and weighing 200-250 gr .A full thickness 10 x 10 mm square wound was created under general anesthesia. The wounds in experimental groups, were treated once a day with aloe vera gel, Mentha pulegium essence, combination of both, and the phenytoin ointment. No treatment was performed for control group wounds. Results: The number of fibroblasts and the number of vessels in the wound bed after treatment with aloe vera, Mentha pulegium essence or a combination of the two were significantly different compared to the positive control and control groups. Aloe vera-treated group also showed greater number of fibroblast, neutrophil and vascular variables in their wound bed. The results showed a higher percentage of recovery in the aloe vera recipient group than the Mentha pulegium group and a high percentage of recovery in the group treated with the combination of both plants. Conclusion :The results of our study showed that topical application of aloe vera gel, based on histopathological criteria, had a greater effect on accelerating open wound healing than Mentha pulegium essence, and it was also shown that the combination of both plants accelerated wound healing.
