low-level laser for treatment of cancer oral mucositis

Introduction: Oral mucositis (OM) is an inflammatory condition of the mucosa that presents with erythema, ulceration, hemorrhage, edema, and pain. It is one of the main complications of patients on cancer therapy, with several nutritional limitations and the ability to cause secondary infections and fever (1). Low level laser therapy aims to treat or prevent OM by promoting healing, reducing inflammation and increasing cell metabolism (2). The aim of this review study was to assess the effect of low level laser therapy for prevention and management of oral mucositis in cancer patients.Methods: The electronic databases searched included Pubmed, ISI Web of Knowledge andGoogle scholar with keywords as oral mucositis , low level laser therapy from 2000 to 2019.Results: The results of most studies showed that photobiomodulation (PBM) reduced the severity of mucositis. Also, it can delay the appearance of severe mucositis (3).Conclusion: Low level laser therapy is a safe and effective approach for management and prevention of oral mucositis
