histopathologic evaluation of the clinical efficacy of Vicryl plus suture material in suturing infected canine urinary bladder

In this study 12 adult male mixed breed dogs were used. After confirmation of their health status and ruling out parasitic infestation, bacterial cystitis was induced using alcoholic solution of salicylic acid and E.coli as described by Senior. Forty eight hours after experimental cystitis was induced, ventral midline celiotomy was performed and ventral cystotomy undertaken in all animals. All 2cm incision was made in the left and right side of the ventral bladder wall. All incision were closed using full thickness simple continuous sutures of vicryl and vicryl plus suture material. Vicryl plus sutures were used in thr left incisions in 6 animals and right incisions in 6 animals. Vicryl sutures were also used in the same manner. Ventral midline celiotomy was routinel closed in three layers. The animals were eutharized on 3, 7, 14 and 28 following cystotomy and tissue samples were collected from the incision site for histopathologic comparison of inflammation and wound healing of the two suture materials. Over all, theinflammatory reaction and presence of inflammatory cells and vascular reactionswere markedly less in vicryl plus suture as compared with vicryl suture. Also epithelial regeneration and formation of reparative connective tissue matrix alongside angiogenesis was markedly more evident in incision sutured with vicryl plus compared to incisions sutured with vicryl.
