THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MINDFULNESS-BASED ON COGNITIVE THERAPY (MBCT) IN REDUCING PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS AMONG ADDICTS

Background and Aim : Addiction is a complex problem that reduces the quality of life and caused psychological distresses in patients. This study aimed at evaluating the effective of mindfulness-based on cognitive therapy (mbct) in reducing psychological distress among addicts.Methods : The research method and the chosen design were the quasi-experimental ones and the pre-test/post-test with a control group, respectively. The statistical population of this study contained all addicts of harm reduction center (DIC) in Karaj in the last quarter of 2016. According to available sampling, 22 people out of this population were chosen and placed randomly into two experimental and control groups (11 people in each group). The experimental group participated in eight group sessions of mindfulness, each lasting 90 minutes, while the control group received no interventions. For collecting the desired data, besides the depression scale, stress, and tension (DASS) was used. The collected data was analyzed using statistical analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test. Results : The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the mean score of the experimental and the control group in the post-test phase, and also in reducing psychological distress of these patients, the mindfulness instructions were significantly effective (p<0.01). Conclusion : Therefore, it is recommended that by training this group of patients in mindfulness skills, the majority of their psychological problems will be resolved
