THE EFFECTIVENESS OF GROUP THERAPY BASED ON COMMITMENT AND ACCEPTANCE (ACT) ON ANXIETY AND ALEXITHYMIA IN ADDICTS WITH PSYCHOSOMATIC DISORDERS

Background and Aim : Purpose: Drug addiction is a modifier of mood and behavior. People who are addicted and substance abuse are simultaneously affected by other disorders such as anxiety, depression and personality disorders. On the other hand, Alexithymia has been identified as an effective personality trait in mental illness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of group therapy based on acceptance and commitment on the anxiety and Alexithymia among addicts with Psychosomatic Disorders.Methods : Method: This research was a quasi-experimental and pre-test post-test design with control group. Using the available sampling method, 22 addicts referring to psychiatrists of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences Who had a high score in the Alexithymy Toronto Questionnaire and Beck Anxiety Inventory and they were selected through a structured diagnostic and clinical interview based on the diagnostic and statistical guidelines Manual of Mental Disorders DSM-V that Were diagnosed with Psychosomatic Disorders. After homogenization, the research samples were randomly divided into two experimental groups (n = 11) and control group (n = 11). The experimental group received group therapy based on acceptance and commitment (ACT) in 8 sessions and the control group did not receive any treatment.Results : Results: In this study, covariance analysis was used and the results indicated that the group therapy based on acceptance and commitment was reduction anxiety and Alexithymy and symptoms of Psychosomatic disorders in the experimental group compared with the control group.Conclusion : Conclusion: The results of this study indicate the effectiveness of group therapy based on acceptance and commitment in decreasing the severity of anxiety and Alexithymia and reducing symptoms and improving Psychosomatic disorders. This treatment can be used as an effective treatment for the reduction of addicts anxiety and Alexithymia, as well as the reduction of symptoms of Psychosomatic disorders in addicts.
