چکیده مقاله:
Background and Aim : Methamphetamine (METH) induced psychotic disorder is a psychiatric emergency. Treatment guidelines using antipsychotics to control the negative and positive symptoms of psychosis has not been thoroughly discussed. the aim of this study is to evaluate efficacy of Risperidone to treat positive and negative symptoms of Methamphetamine induced psychosis. Methods : In this open-label uncontrolled trial, 32 patients (Mean age =31.9±8.27) with Methamphetamine Induced Psychosis were selected from addiction treatment ward. Psychiatric interview, thorough physical examination and urine test was performed. Positive and negative symptoms were rated by Scale for Assessment of Positive symptoms (SAPS) and the Scale for Assessment of Negative symptoms (SANS). Risperidone (Mean dose= 1.92±0.56) was started. Ratings were repeated after one week. Results : All positive symptoms including Total SAPS score were reduced significantly after treatment but only inattention (p<0.001) and total SANS score (p=0.005) were reduced statistically significant after a week. We found no correlation between Risperidone dosage and SANS or SAPS scores. Conclusion : Risperidone is effective in management of Methamphetamine Induced Psychosis and it is more effective on positive symptoms.
