STUDY OF EMOTIONAL SCHEMAS IN PEOPLE WITH AND WITHOUT DRUG DEPENDENCE

Background and Aim : Early experiences and childhood trauma have an important impact on individuals’ behavioral pattern. This research has been conducted to compare the emotional schemas of individuals with and without drug dependence.Methods : The total 100 addicted candidates have been selected for this study based on interviewing clients who referred to the addiction treatment centers belong to the 15th district of Tehran. Another 100 individuals with no drug dependence have also been selected with the similar demographic characteristics of drug dependence candidates. Leahy s Emotional Schema Questionnaire (2002) was administered to both groups and data were collected and processed using multivariate analysis of variance.Results : The results of ANOVA test showed that individuals with drug dependence in scales of rumination emotion (P 0 / 05), lack of control and numbness (P 0 / 01) had higher scores than individuals with non-drug dependence. Also, candidates who did not have drug dependence scored higher for rationality and emotional expression in comparison with those with drug dependence (P 0/05).Conclusion : The results of this study demonstrate the importance of emotional schemas on people’s tendency to consume drugs which can be used as applied therapies in psychotherapy
