THE PREVALENCE OF SMOKING IN GENERAL POPULATION IN A METROPOLITAN AREA

Background and Aim : The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of smoking in Mashhad according to self report.Methods : This is a cross-sectional study in adult populations (age> 16 year) in Mashhad, 2015. A stratified, multistage cluster-sampling design was used to select 2700 adults in 4 districts (strata). At the second stage, 5 clusters (health centers) were selected randomly in each district, and in the third stage, we then selected street randomly. Trained national health workers (participated in 2-day workshop) interviewed respondents at home and obtained data on smoking, age, gender, education, occupation and income by administering a checklist. The check list was administered face-to-face to the any competent adult member of the household who were eligible. For reducing non-response and underreporting, we assured participants that the information obtained would be confidential and used only for research purposes. This research was approved by the ethical board of the Mashhad university of medical sciences. All analyses were done using the SPSS 11.5 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, USA) statistical program.Results : Based on this study the number of smokers was 250 people that was equal to 9.17%. According to the results most of the smokers were male (62. %). table 1 shows the demographic factors among two groups. The Median (Min-Max) duration of the smoking was 20 (1-70) years in female and 18 (1-60) in males. The Median (Min-Max) cigarettes/day was 10 (4-20) in female and 10 (1-40) in males. Totally, 82 (77.8%) of subjects who used hookah were female, but among the cigarette smoker 133 (92%) were male. It was indicated that the pattern of tobacco use is different among females.
