RISK FACTORS FOR DRUG USE AMONG ADOLESCENTS: A REVIEW ARTICLE

Background and Aim : Identification of risk factors that influence initiation and Exacerbates of drug use in the adolescent population is important, therefore, the present study was conducted to determine risk factors for drug use among adolescentsMethods : In this review article, four international databases (Medline/PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar) and two national databases (Scientific Information Database and MagIran) were searched in 2019. Thereafter, Persian and English papers referring to the risk factors of drug use were included.Results : A total of 72 papers were found in the initial search of the databases and 12 papers were included for final review. There were multiple risk factors for drug use that included, poor academic achievement, lack of religiosity, early alcohol use, low self-esteem, psychopathology, poor relationship with parents, perceived adult drug use, sensation seeking, perceived peer drug use, and lack of social conformityConclusion : There are several risks factors for drug use that need to be identified and controlled at an early stage. Adolescents are at high risk for drug use. Overall, our results indicate the need for further education for Adolescents and Families
