COMPARING PARENTING STYLES OF DRUG CONSUMER PARENTS WITH NORMAL PARENTS

Background and Aim : Nowadays, the subject of addiction is a family issue in addition to personal and social problems. No community can claim healthiness if it does not have healthy families. The family is the most fundamental institution of socializing children in the early years of life. The present study aimed to compare the parenting styles of addicted parents with non-addicted parents.Methods : 35 addicted person referred to rehabilitation centers and 35 normal subjects in Bojnourd in 2012 were selected by multistage random sampling method. A questionnaire of parenting styles based on the Bamerind theory was developed. The data were analyzed using SPSS software.Results : The results showed that 54.4% of the sample size were women and 45.6% were men also 88.2% were married and 2.9% were single. Most people were between 30 and 50 years of age, most people had an elementary education. There was no significant difference between parenting style of liberation and autocracy, but in the logical authoritarian style was 0.042 significant differenceConclusion : Each parenting process has different effects on children’s health. Parents need to be aware of each parenting style effects. The present study showed that there is a significant difference between the logical authoritative styles, which is the best way to communicate with children, between the two groups.
