IMPACT OF LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOP ON KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND RISK OF ADDICTION OF MALE NURSING STUDENTS IN URMIA UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES

Background and Aim : Addiction is one of the most important social and political health issues in the world, especially in developing countries and is common among people, among which university students are also considered as young members of society who are at risk. In this regard, this quasi-experimental study was conducted to determine the effect of life skills training on knowledge and attitude about narcotics in nursing students of Urmia University of Medical Sciences. Methods : The data collection tool was a researcher-made questionnaire on students knowledge and attitudes about drug abuse. The sample size was 100 students who were randomly divided into two groups (n=50). Since the beginning of the study, researchers have studied people who have entered and wanted to participate in the study. After the workshops were held to determine correlation between students knowledge and attitudes of two groups about drug abuse with demographic characteristics. Data were collected by SPSS-18 software and analyzed by descriptive statistics and central indices, chi-square test and regression correlation coefficient for linear analysis. The significance level 0.05 was used to analyze the results.Results : It was found that the prevalence of addiction in students was not high. In the test group, the mean scores after the life skills workshop on knowledge and attitude about narcotics in the post test were significantly increased compared to the pretest (P = 0.05). Conclusion : Education can increase knowledge and change the attitude of students towards the harmfulness of drug misuse rehabilitation are effective and improve communication skills, decision-making, problem-solving, critical thinking, coping with undesirable emotions and increasing social acceptance of individuals, and the ability of these skills, in turn, can increase the likelihood of drug abuse reduction. On the other hand, in view of the presence of young people in academic environments, the development and implementation of life skills training programs in a comprehensive and continuous manner is recommended as an appropriate means of preventing drug abuse in universities
