A COMPARISON OF POSITIVE AFFECT, NEGATIVE AFFECT AND DIFFICULTIES IN EMOTION REGULATION IN WOMEN WITH METHAMPHETAMINE USE DISORDER AND NORMAL WOMEN

Background and Aim : Substance use among women is a growing and significant public health concern. Emotion regulation difficulties are known to underlie mental health conditions including substance use disorder. The aim of the present study is to compare positive affect, negative affect and difficulties in emotion regulation in women with methamphetamine use disorder and normal women.Methods : The study is casual-comparative and the population was comprised of all women with substance use disorder in Baghe Fereshteh Midterm Accommodations Center in Tabriz. Using purposive sampling method and regarding the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 50 people were selected as a sample. Then 50 normal women matched on age, education level, marital status and economic status were selected by convenience sampling. To collect data, the Positive/Negative Affect Scales (PANAS) and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) were used in both groups. The collected data were analyzed descriptive statistic method of Multivariate Analysis of Variance.Results : The results showed that there was a significant difference between both groups in negative affect. But there was no significant difference in positive affect and difficulties in emotion regulation.Conclusion : According to the findings of this study, it can be concluded that drug usage has been possibly the cause of the increase in negative affect. Identification and better understanding of these results can be an effective solution in psychological counseling
