The relationship between attitude toward labor pain and fear of childbirth in primigravida women in referring to hospitals affiliated to Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in 2018

Introduction: Labor pain is one of the most important symptoms of labor and also the mainconcerns of pregnant women. Factors affecting labor pain including physiological,psychological, and social factors that among of these can be mentioned to attitudes towardlabor pain. So the aim of this study was to determine the relationship between attitude tolabor pain and fear of childbirth in primigravida women.Methods: This descriptive-correctional (cross-sectional) study was performed on 230pregnant women who were referred to hospitals affiliated to Isfahan University of MedicalSciences in a two-stage sampling in 2018. In the beginning, the participants completed thequestionnaire of demographic/fertility characteristics, fear of childbirth (16Q). Data wereanalyzed by SPSS software version 22 and Pearson correlation coefficient, Student’s t-test,one-way ANOVA, and general linear regressionResults: The mean (standard deviation) of the attitude to labor pain was 53.96 (1.9), fear of childbirth 43.08(9.8). One hundred and eighty-three (79.6%) had negative attitude and 47 (20.4%) had positive attitude toward labor pain. There was a significant positive correlation between attitude toward labor pain and fear of childbirth((P = 0.001, r = 0.86).Conclusion: According to the results, attitude toward labor pain related to fear of childbirth, so that women with a negative attitude towards labor pain had more than fear of childbirth and longer first and second stages. Therefore, by planning and holding targeted training sessions by midwives as an effective health care provider in pregnancy about promotion the level of knowledge and changing the attitude of pregnant mothers towards labor pain, the fear of childbirth can be reduced, therefore reducing the complications of Fear of giving birth and long delivery stages.
