Awareness of Judicial Legislation in Operating Room Nurses

Introduction: Obligations to the law and respect for the rules of the signs and ethics. In order to present secure and qualified services in health care systems, it is essential to bring legal and juridical aspects relevant with patients’ attendance into notice.Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out through census sampling with participation of 143 operating room technicians working in nine educational hospitals of Iran University of Medical Sciences. The data were collected via demographic survey and researcher made questionnaire in relation to awareness of judicial legislation in operating room. A formal and content analysis was conducted. The test-retest method was used to determine the reliability of the questionnaire. To assess the internal correlation of Cronbach s alpha, R = 0.8. Data were analyzed by Chi-square test, Pearson correlation, SPSS version 16 and descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 143 operating room nurses were present in this study. Among the demographic variables (including age, sex, work experience and marital status), there was a statistically significant correlation between age and work experience with the participants awareness level. For the vast majority of the population, the level of awareness was low.Conclusion: Considering the nurses weak level of awareness of judicial laws, it is suggested to provide these staff with courses and workshops in order to increase their awareness level. The finding provide evidence of plans and strategies to increase the operating room nurses´ awareness level of their professional legislation, considering the demographic factors impact on their awareness in order to reduce the incidence of errors and legal and judicial problems. Clinical Relevance: Awareness of legal and judicial issues related to the profession can prevent irreparable errors
