چکیده مقاله:

Communities of Practice (CoP) is not a new concept for researchers and practitioners in the field of knowledge management but still there are debates about the best strategies for creating and managing them. It is argued that CoPs are manageable when they are on the other side. Some believe that this type of organizations could not be managed due to their self-organized nature. Studies in the past decade show that creating and managing CoPs is not an easy task, and selecting an appropriate type of CoP is crucial for sustainability and achieving the targets of organizations. The process of selecting an appropriate type and managing CoPs efficiently is discussed under the subject of Knowledge Management Strategy, and it is important to know the interest of organizations and their expectations from these communities. CoPs are different in size, purpose, way of communication, leadership, management style, member selection process and other criteria, when their success is r lated to how they fit the organization and its features. This research tends to focus on both descriptive and prescriptive approaches as on one hand we are looking for a comprehensive typology model to classify different types of CoPs, and dealing with the problem of selecting a suitable CoP concerning organizational context on the other. In this paper, two different matrices are introduced. The first matrix deals with controllable variables which are representatives of CoP types, and the second matrix presents organizational factors which are significant in selecting an appropriate type of CoP. Thirteen criteria and seventeen indices are introduced in the first and the second matrices respectively. This could be called CoP strategy. It is assumed that creating and managing CoPs in an organization is part of the strategy or policy of the organization; therefore, in line and harmony with the strategic components of the organization. This is a theoretical work based on qualitative approach. The typology model is developed in different steps using Delphi Techniques and findings are validated by using experts’ opinion. It is claimed that the introduced model could change for a wider perspective and help select appropriate CoPs for different organizations.
