Comparative effectiveness of adult mosquito sampling methods dealing with odor-baited resting boxes for malaria vectors and Culex pipiens in Iran

Background: Some ecological characteristics such as host preference pattern, species abundance rate, and oviposition behavior is mediated whether directly or indirectly by sampling mosquitoes technics. Among different producers, baited resting boxes have been introduced as an efficient method for the collection of malaria vectors in the field..Objectives: Comparative effectiveness of adult mosquito sampling methodsMaterials and Methods: Overall, 2722 individual mosquitoes were collected by 6 methods in the field in Bandar Abbas country, south of Iran.Results: The number of captured mosquitoes were the most in pit shelter. Females species didn’t properly lure to resting traps baited with Co2 produced by yeast while they were attracted to cow urine baited traps particularly unfed Culex pipiens and Anopheles stephensi.Conclusion: Cattle urine baited resting traps can be considered as a perfect sampling strategy for Culex pipiens within control and surveillance programme, south of Iran but further study should be devoted to identifying host preferences by determining the source of blood meals.
