Gamma Knife Radiosurgery in Pituitary Tumors

Although the gold standard treatment in non functional pituitary adenomas and all functional pituitary adenomas except prolactinomas; is microsurgical intervention and in prolactinomas medical management;but in many cases these treatments may fail and an adjuant therapy may be needed. Radiotherapy and in recent years gamma knife radiosurgery has become the second gold standard and because of excellent result of gammaknife radiosurgery in controlling the tumor size and the secretion of hormones in secreting adenomas near the results of surgery or even better,it has become in some cases as the primary gold standard treatment. In this article we review our cases and the efficacy and side effects of gammaknife in treating pituitary adenomas.
