چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Bronchiectasis as a chronic respiratory disease affects many organs of the body. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of malnutrition in Non-Cystic Fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis, and correlation between anthropometric measurement and severity of disease. Materials and Methods: A within-subject correlational study of a group of patients with stable non-CF bronchiectasis, who were recruited from our outpatient clinic, was done over a two-year period. These patients were evaluated in terms of daily sputum, smear and culture of sputum, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), pulmonary function tests, and CT scan. Body mass index (BMI), Skin fold thickness (SFT), and Mid Arm Muscle Circumference (MAMC) as anthropometric measurement were evaluated. Results: Sixty- two patients were enrolled in the study. The mean age of the patients was 44.1 ± 15.8 years. Considering BMI ≤18.5 kg / m2, 11 patients (17.7%) were malnourished, and thirteen subjects (21%) had BMI> 30 kg / m2. In 7 patients (11%), MAMC was lower than 25% predicted and in 17 patients (27%) SFT was less than 25% predicted. None of the anthropometric measures were affected byspirometric findings, extension of disease in CT scan, isolated microbial type, and daily sputum volume. The distance traveled in 6MWT was influenced by BMI andSFT (P<0.05) but not affected by MAMC. Conclusion: The prevalence of malnutrition is high in non-CF bronchiectasis patients. This does not correlate with CT findings as well as the degree of airflow obstruction. The distance traveled in 6MWT is affected by BMI and SFT.
