Etiology and Outcome Surgery in Traumatic Gastric Injury in Neonatal Period in Tabriz Children Hospital

Background:Stomach perforation in the neonates is a very rare situation with high mortality, especially in premature infants with other concomitant diseases. To evaluate the etiology and outcome for neonatal gastric perforation we conducted this survey.Methods:Between 2011 and 2019, fifteen patients underwent surgical intervention for repair of gastric injury in Tabriz Children’s Hospital (a university-affiliated hospital). The clinical signs, operation finding and outcome of the patients retrospectively analyzed.Results:Among the fifteen patients, six patient (40%) traumatized by gastric tube (punch-out lesions), seven patients (47%) injured by baro - trauma and two patients (13%) underwent overzealous resuscitation. Three, five and one of them died in each groups respectively. In baro- trauma group, three of them had esophageal atresia and all of them died post-operatively. Among the fifteen patients, ten patients (67%) were preterm babies, and five (33%) of them had weight under 1500 gr and two of them (13%) were under 1000 gr.Conclusion:Results of treatment of gastric perforation is awful at present. Standardization of neonatal intensive care and prevention from gastric injury, must considered.
