چکیده مقاله:
Introduction:Foreign body (FB) ingestion in children is common and most children are observed to be between 6 months and 3 years of age. Although most FBs in the gastrointestinal tract pass spontaneously without complications, endoscopic or surgical removal may be required in a few children.Case Presentayion: A 10-month old boy was referred to our hospital due to disability to eating solid food. Chest and abdominal X-Ray showed some irregularity in esophagus and stomach. In fibroptic endoscopic evaluation a huge, soft and flexible foreign body was found in esophagus and stomach. Attempts for extracting it by fibroptic endoscopy was not successful, therefore we extracted it by rigid esophagoscope. It was a 30×40 Cm plastic bag which was swallowed completely and could cover all chest wall, abdomen and pelvic wall like a small blanket.Discussion:Esophageal FBs are removed spontaneously without complications; however, a few cannot easily pass through the pylorus, stomach, duodenum, ileocecal valve, Meckel’s diverticulum, and/or anus, and therefore, 10% of ingested FBs may remain in the GI tract. Children characteristics such as age and weight vary, as do the type and size of the ingested FBs. Additionally, endoscopic removal of FBs ismore difficult in young children than in adults. Therefore, it is difficult to determine an appropriate timing for endoscopic removal of FBs.Conclusion: Since the risk of huge foreign body ingested to obstruct the GI tract, it is recommended to extract even fine and soft foreign bodies which are larger than to pass through narrow lumens in GI tract.
