چکیده مقاله:

Background: The current treatment of secundum type atrial septal defects (ASDs) is the closure of the defect through surgery or use of percutaneous devices. The current literature lacks data on comparisons of right heart chambers functions between surgical ASD closure and percutaneous device ASD closure at follow-up durations; 1-5 years. We sought to evaluate the right atrial (RA) and right ventricular (RV) functions in patients with surgical ASD closure, patients with device ASD closure, and a control group between 1 and 5 years post procedurally. Methods: The study population comprised 30 device ASD closure patients and 30 surgical ASD closure patients, who were matched for sex, age, and procedural time, in addition to 30 control healthy subjects. The RA functions were evaluated by volumetric parameters in echocardiography and RV function was evaluated by tissue Doppler imaging. Results: The RV s’, e’ a’, E/e’ were reduced in surgical ASD closure group compared with control and device ASD closure. There was no difference regarding these markers between control and device ASD closure. RA total emptying fraction was reduced in surgical ASD closure group compared with control and device ASD closure, RA passive emptying fraction was reduced in device ASD closure group compared with control and surgical ASD closure and RA active emptying fraction was reduced in surgical ASD closure group compared with control. Conclusions: The RV systolic and diastolic function were reduced in surgical ASD closure group compared with control and device ASD closure group, RA reservoir and contraction function were reduced in surgical ASD closure group, conduit function was reduced in device ASD closure group.
