Residual Stresses in Dissimilar Ferrous Welds using Neutron Diffraction Technique

Residual stress (RS) distributions of dissimilar welds (1018 to 304) were measured using neutron diffraction (ND). Effects of material properties on RS distributions were discussed. It was found that the RS induced by arc welding exhibited distinctive trend between the similar and dissimilar welds. Weld zones were characterized by optical microscopy, micro-hardness, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX).
